(KWMN)- PREVIEW BY RYAN GLYNN
The Winona Winhawks (3-3) are set to host the Kasson-Mantorville Komets (3-3) on MEA Wednesday Night at 7 PM at Paul Giel Field.
Last Friday night the Winhawks came away with a 28-24 win over South St. Paul at home. In total, Winona combined for 268 yards in the win with Junior quarterback, Kyle Keller passing 14 for 21, 136 yards, 2 TD, and 1 INT. Junior receiver Preston Van Beek’s only reception was a 54-yard touchdown, in what was the only play during that drive for the Winhawks. Another Junior receiver Brayden Styba had 3 catches for 19 yards and 1 touchdown. On the ground, the Winhawks gained 132 yards and scored twice. Senior running back Michael Burke was the leading rusher with 83 yards off 10 carries and was responsible for one of the touchdowns while Keller ran for the other. Burke has 370 rushing yards and 6 touchdowns on the season. The Winhawks defense was led by linebacker Logan Gappa who had 23 total tackles. A late turn over on downs forced by the Winona defense solidified the win to get back to .500.
Kasson-Mantorville lost 37-7 to Byron last Friday night at home. The Komets were outgained by the No. 6 ranked Bears 346 to 178. Kasson-Mantorville senior quarterback Logan Louks completed 8 of 12 passes for 79 yards. Their ground game produced 99 yards and Parker Richards was the rushing leader with 40 yards on 11 attempts. A four-yard TD run by Louks was the lone Komets score of the contest. Kasson Mantorville has dropped 3 of their last 4 matchups.
The Winhawks have lost 8 consecutive to the Komets and look for their first victory in the series since 2019. With both teams holding identical 3-3 records, the winner of this contest will more than likely earn the 3 seed for the Section 1AAAA playoffs that begin October 27th.
