(KWMN)- The Winona Winhawks (2-1) hit the road to take on fellow Section 1AAAA member, #2 Stewartville Tigers (3-0) on Friday night.
Last Thursday night the Winhawks picked up a 49-18 win over Faribault at Paul Giel Field. The home squad produced a big first half and lead 35-10 at the break. The second half saw the Winhawks score twice more and the Falcons only once. In Total, Winona combined for 494 yards in the win with Junior quarterback, Kyle Keller passing 13 for 15, 233 yards, and 2 TD. Junior receiver Preston Van Beek recorded 4 catches for 52 yards, and one touchdown. Another Junior receiver Easton Nissalke had one catch on the night that went for 71 yards and a score. On the ground, the Winhawks gained 253 yards and scored five times. Keller and Logan Gappa had two rushing touchdowns each. Xavier Vargas scored once and senior running back Michael Burke rushed for 105 yards.
No. 3 Stewartville was victorious 21-19 over No. 2 Kasson-Mantorville in double overtime last Thursday night on the road. Facing a 3rd quarter deficit of 13-0, the Tigers got within one score when Peyton English rushed 49 yards to the endzone to make it 13-7. Junior wide receiver Brett Miller connected on a 12-yard touchdown pass to Karsten Roeder in the 4th quarter. The game remained tied at 13 after an unsuccessful extra point. The game remained deadlocked after 48 minutes and both teams produced no points in the first overtime period. In double overtime the Tigers pulled ahead 21-13 with quarterback Pete Tschetter hitting Isaac Speer for a 10-yard score and then added a two-point conversion. After the Komets scored to get within two, their two-point try was unsuccessful and Stewartville won 21-19. They moved up to No. 2 in this week’s Class 4A rankings.
