(KWMN)- The Winona Winhawks (2-3) look to stop the skid in a Friday Night Matchup against the South St. Paul Packers (4-1).
Winona has dropped both of its last two matchups on the road, but both were against top ten opponents, including #2 Stewartville. The Winhawks struggled offensively last Friday, putting up just 5 points in a 5-57 loss to the #6 ranked Byron Bears. Despite the loss, QB Kyle Keller completed just under 50% of his passes (14/26) and threw for 105 yards. He also added 23 yards on the ground on 9 carries. Brayden Styba hauled in 4 catches for 19 yards, like Easton Nissalke averaged over 10 yards per reception. Defensively, the Winhawks were led by Logan Gappa, who made 10 solo tackles and combined for 15 total. The defense also secured the first points of the game for the Winhawks with a safety in the first quarter. Preston Van Beek shined on special teams, punting for over 164 yards, and making a field goal.
South St. Paul dropped their first game of the season to the #8 Hill-Murray Pioneers, 26-56. A run-heavy team, the Packers have combined for over 13 rushing touchdowns on the season amd over 1,000 yards. They are led by Tyler Berchtold and Matthew Jackson, who account for over half of those yards, while Berchtold has over 5 rushing TDs.
