(MNN)-Minnesota is tightening restrictions on dogs and cats entering the state following outbreaks of the New World Screwworm in Texas and New Mexico. The Minnesota Board of Animal Health says pets cannot be imported from locations with active infestations, and additional requirements now apply to animals coming from affected states. State Veterinarian Dr. Brian Hoefs says the changes are intended to reduce the risk of the destructive parasite reaching Minnesota while still allowing most pet imports to continue. New World Screwworm larvae feed on living tissue and can cause severe wounds in animals.
