(KWNO)-A Winona woman has been sentenced in connection with a case that saddened and baffled the greater Winona community for years.
Jennifer Baechle will receive two years probation and 40 hours of community service for her role in the death of an infant found in a bag in the Mississippi River south of Winona in 2011. The infant came to be known as ‘Baby Angel’ because of angel figurines found with the body.
Law enforcement worked the case for years and in 2023 filed a criminal complaint against Baechle requesting a DNA sample. Eventually authorities used a “trash pull” at Baechle’s residence to obtain a feminine hygiene product. Tests indicated Baechle could be the mother of the baby. In 2025 Winona County authorities arrested and charged Baechle.
Family members of Baechle’s told investigators they recognized a blue pendant that was found in the bag with the child. They also said Baechle collected angel ornaments and figurines.
Baechle has been living in Winona for several years and is married with two children.
