Lois Kubis, age 86, of Winona, MN, died Thursday, April 2, 2026, at Winona Health.
Lois was born June 12, 1939, in Winona, the daughter of Leonard and Esther (Papenfuss) Speltz. She was united in marriage to Duane Kubis June 14, 1958, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Winona.
Lois’s love for people, and especially her family, showed each and every day. There was no doing things halfway for her if it meant making somebody else’s day a little brighter or a little better. She would make gigantic, elaborate meals just because her family was visiting for the afternoon. She would buy so many Christmas presents it felt like she knew your wish list better than you did. Lois “adopted” grandkids as if they truly were her own. It was important to her to make things as special as she could imagine. She did all of this in the most calm, modest, and nonchalant way you could imagine.
In her free time, Lois took this same approach towards animals. She was truly the Snow White of the neighborhood for how she took care of every animal she came in contact with, no matter what kind or species. She also enjoyed watching Minnesota sports and offering advice to the TV, and anybody who would listen, of what the teams and players should be doing differently. She will also be remembered by many as their hair stylist, as she owned her own hair salon for many years. More than anything, she will be remembered as a strong, loving, Christian woman who poured her heart out into everything she did.
Lois is survived by her sons: Terry, and Mike (Kim) Kubis; granddaughters: Olivia (Kyle) Swiderski, and Savannah (Colin Fakler) Kubis; great-granddaughters: Karley and Avery Swiderski; siblings: Ronald (LaVonne) Speltz, Arthur Speltz, John (Charlotte) Speltz, Ruth (Chris) Roffler, and Robert (Susan) Speltz.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Duane; and sister-in-law, Jeanette Speltz.
