(KWMN) –

John Cassellius announced his resignation as head football coach at Winona Senior High School after 21 seasons, choosing to highlight the people behind the program rather than the milestones.

“Over the past two decades, I have had the privilege of working with incredible young men, dedicated families, and a community that truly supports its students and programs,” Cassellius wrote. “This decision was not made lightly. Coaching at Winona has been one of the greatest honors of my professional life.”

Cassellius inherited a team in the midst of a 37-game losing streak and built it into a state contender, winning more than 100 games, four section titles and making four trips to U.S. Bank Stadium, including a state championship appearance in 2016. Several players advanced to college football, including Aaron Witt at the University of Wisconsin.

“Watching (the players) grow as athletes and, more importantly, as people has been the most rewarding part of this journey,” he wrote.

Cassellius thanked his coaching staff and their families, as well as his wife, Emily, and children, Bryan and Molly.

“Your dedication and pride in Winhawk football meant more to me than you know,” he wrote.

Cassellius, who also served as a physical education teacher before becoming principal at Houston High School, earned his 100th career win this fall and said, “Winona football will always hold a special place in my heart. I am proud of what we have built together and confident the program will continue to thrive in the years ahead.”
