(KWNO)-A Massachusetts couple are unlikely heroes after rescuing a man who drove his vehicle into the Mississippi River. According to the Winona County Sheriff’s Office, Brittany Pashkow and Dustin Colson-Leaning are traveling across the country this summer in their camper. They were stopped at the Dresbach rest area on Monday when a vehicle drove down an embankment and into the water. The driver was having a medical emergency.

Pashkow immediately called 911. As the car was sinking, Colson-Leaning went into the river, extricated the semi-conscious driver and pulled him to the shore. The driver was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The vehicle was completely submerged by the time law enforcement arrived. A WCSO Facebook post praised Pashkow and Colson-Leaning, stating without “their life saving efforts, the end result would have been a lot different.”
