Spring has finally arrived in Winona, and after months of gray skies and staying indoors, it’s time to stretch those legs and breathe in that fresh Mississippi River air. Whether you’re a casual stroller, a seasoned hiker, or someone who just wants a peaceful bench with a scenic view, Winona’s got you covered.
Here are some of our favorite spots to get outside and moving this season:
1. Garvin Heights Overlook

If you haven’t taken the drive (or better yet, the hike) up to Garvin Heights in a while, this is your sign. The overlook gives you a postcard-worthy view of Winona and the mighty Mississippi. There’s a short hiking trail from the base, or you can park up top and take a leisurely walk along the bluff. Either way, bring your camera, and maybe a thermos of coffee.
2. Lake Park Path

Circle East Lake Winona for an easy, paved stroll that’s perfect for walkers of all ages. The path is flat, scenic, and full of friendly faces (and dogs!). You’ll pass by birds, ducks, blooming trees, and maybe even spot someone fishing. Bonus: there are benches and picnic tables if you want to take a break and soak in the sunshine.
3. Prairie Island Trail
Looking for something a little more off-the-beaten-path? Prairie Island offers a peaceful walk surrounded by water, marsh, and wildlife. It’s a hidden gem just minutes from town, bring binoculars if you’re into bird watching!
4. Holzinger Lodge Trails

Ready to break a little sweat? The trails behind Holzinger Lodge offer a variety of terrain for hikers and mountain bikers. You’ll feel like you’ve escaped into the woods without ever leaving the city limits.
5. Great River Bluffs State Park (just a short drive away)

OK, technically this one’s just outside Winona, but it’s too beautiful not to mention. Great River Bluffs offers several trails with incredible views of the Mississippi River Valley. Pack a lunch and make a day of it, this park never disappoints.
So What Are You Waiting For?
Throw on your favorite walking shoes, grab a water bottle, and cue up your favorite classic hits station, nothing makes a walk better than a little Fleetwood Mac or CCR in the background.
Spring doesn’t last forever in Minnesota, so take advantage of the sunshine while it’s here. Whether you’re walking solo, meeting up with friends, or just looking for some quiet time with nature, Winona has a trail, path, or overlook with your name on it.
