(MNN)-Election history made in La Crosse. Shaundel Washington-Spivey is the first Black and first openly LGBTQ+ mayor in the city’s history, defeating City Council President Chris Kahlow in last week’s La Crosse mayoral election. Just 451 votes separated the candidates according to unofficial results from the La Crosse County Clerk’s Office. Washington-Spivey takes office April 15 succeeding Mayor Mitch Reynolds, who did not seek re-election. Washington-Spivey previously served on the La Crosse School Board.
