ROCK REWIND: Celebs Find Love, Tours begin, and A Few Sad Moments

Another week of Rock & Roll History!

Some major accolades occurred:

Sergeant Elvis Presley was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in 1960.

In 1965, The Temptations’ “My Girl” hit #1, their first of four chart toppers.

Van Halen started their first ever US tour in Chicago as the opening act for Journey in 1978

In 1983, Michael Jackson’s Billie Jean hits #1, his fourth chart topper.

Prince would record “When Doves Cry” in 1984

In 1985, “We Are The World” was released

Mr. Mister’s ”Kyrie” hits #1 in 1986.

The Beastie Boys album, Licensed to Ill, becomes the first rap album to top the US chart. It would stay at #1 for 7 weeks in 1987

U2’s The Joshua Tree won the Grammy for Album of the Year and Best Performance by Rock Duo or Group with Vocal in 1988.

Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle went to #1 with A Whole New World, the theme song of Disney’s Aladdin in 1993

In 1994, The Bodyguard soundtrack won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year, with “I Will Always Love You” taking Record of the Year

Eric Clapton was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist in 2000, making him the first person inducted three times. He was inducted in as a member of the groups, The Yardbirds and Cream

A MAJOR technological advance:

The  first CD players were released in America in 1983

Some exciting moments happened:

Johnny Cash and June Carter were married in Franklin, Kentucky in 1968

in 1993, Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown became parents when Whitney gave birth to a baby girl named Bobbi Kristina Houston Brown

Elton John announced he was planning to marry his partner, David Furnish in 2004

Some scary moments and controversy occurred:

John Lennon created an international controversy when he said the Beatles “are probably bigger than Jesus right now” in 1966.

In 1994, Frank Sinatra collapsed on stage during a concert in Richmond, Virginia. The crooner would retire the following year at age 79.

Kurt Cobain was rushed to the hospital after overdosing on alcohol and drugs in a Rome hotel in 1994

A couple of sad moments occurred:

Julianne Philips and Bruce Springsteen divorced in 1989

In 1994, Nirvana played their last show in Munich, Germany

And we lost one legend:

Country music singer Patsy Cline died in a plane crash near Camden, Tennessee at the age of 30 in 1963
