ROCK REWIND: What Stays at Number 1, Who Got Hitched, and Who Got in Trouble! (Plus more!!)

A MASSIVE list of awards and accolades:

Elvis Presley entered the music charts for the first time with “Heartbreak Hotel” in 1956.

In 1966 Nancy Sinatra’s ”These Boots Are Made For Walkin”’ hits #1, her only solo single to do so

Sesame Street’s  Ernie sang “Rubber Duckie” in 1970. The song was released as a single and went to #16 on the charts

In 1973, Roberta Flack’s ”Killing Me Softly With His Song” hits #1, her second of three singles to do so

Eagles’ Greatest Hits album became the first U.S. album to sell 2,000,000 copies in 1976.

In 1978, The Village People play their first concert, performing at 2001 Odyssey in New York City

Queen’s ”Crazy Little Thing Called Love” hits #1 in 1980, their first single to top the charts

Michael Jackson won his first Grammy in 1980, for Best R& B Performance for ”Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough”

In 1981, Eddie Rabbitt’s ” I Love a Rainy Night” hit #1

Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” hit #1 in the U.S. The album spent a total of 37 weeks at #1 in 1983

Van Halen hits #1 with ”Jump” in 1984, their first and only chart topper.

In 1985, Bruce Springsteen wins his first Grammy for the Best Male Vocal Performance award for Dancing In The Dark

DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince (Will Smith) win the first-ever rap Grammy (Best Rap Performance) for “Parents Just Don’t Understand” in 1989

In 1994, Prince is granted the trademark on the symbol he has been using as his name.

Carlos Santana won eight Grammy Awards for his album “Supernatural” in 2000, tying the record set by Michael Jackson in 1983 for “Thriller.”

Simon & Garfunkel receive a Lifetime Achievement Grammy at the 2003 awards, and sing together for the first time in ten years.

In 2005, Jamie Foxx won a Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal of Ray Charles in the movie ”Ray’

Queen, with Adam Lambert, opened the 2019 Oscars with a medley of “We Will Rock You” and “We Are The Champions.” The biopic Bohemian Rhapsody won four awards, more than any other film at the ceremony.

One rock couple got hitched:

Kurt Cobain of Nirvana and Courtney Love of Hole got married in Hawaii in 1992

A couple got divorced:

Elvis Presley and his wife Priscilla were legally separated in 1972. The couple had married in 1967

In 1998, Pamela Anderson divorced Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee

Some sad/tragic moments occurred:

In 1972, George and Patti Harrison were injured in a car crash; Patti was unconscious for several days

Ray Charles was attacked by a member of his audience who tried to strangle him with a rope in 1977.

George Michael announced that Wham! would officially split in 1986

Selena performed her last concert in Houston before being shot by her manager in 1995

In 1995, Frank Sinatra sang for the very last time at his 80th Birthday Gala. His closing song was New York, New York’

Controversy was ever present:

in 2006, Pop star George Michael was charged with drug possession after he was found slumped over his steering wheel. He was booked under his real name, Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou.

in 2021, DUI and reckless driving charges against Bruce Springsteen were thrown out. The rocker did plead guilty to consuming alcohol in a closed area

 

And I thought we were free of legends passing but earlier this week, we lost the legend Roberta Flack at the age of 88 after a battle with ALS.
