A new bill in the Minnesota Senate would add another screening test for parents and their newborn children. Senator Jeremy Miller (R-Winona) introduced that bill that would screen for Metachromatic Leukodystrophy (MLD).
“There’s currently not a cure for MLD but there are treatments available to slow the progression of the disease as well as treatments to manage the symptoms and enhance the quality of life,” said Miller
Shanna Quimby and her husband Nick lost their son Gavin in 2015 to MLD, a rare but fatal disorder.
“Gavin started showing signs of MLD at the age of one and progressively got worse and worse. If we had known at birth that he was sick, he would have a better chance today of getting earlier treatment,” said Quimby.
Senator Miller says the bill has bipartisan support. He’s waiting to hear when the proposal will get a hearing.
