Long time Edina High School hockey coach Willard Ikola passed away yesterday at the age of 92. Ikola was born in Eveleth and took the Golden Bears to the state tournament as a goaltender in 1947 and also led Eveleth to three straight titles from 1948-1950.
Ikola also won a national title with Michigan and represented the United States internationally including at the 1956 Olympics. But Ikola, along with his trademark hounds-toothed fedora hat, served as head coach for the Edina Hornets from 1958-1991 and won the state tournament eight times under his watch. Ikola finished with a record of 600-140-38 behind the bench.
