(KWMN)- The Winona Boys started hot against rival Austin last night, but slowly went cold, and turnovers allowed Austin to pull away as the Winhawks fall 81-53 on their home floor.
“I think the first six minutes, was great,” Head Coach Kyle Martin said, “I thought we were on our way…They did some good things. It’s hard to replicate a defense like that in practice…We got to make layups, we got to take care of the ball, and we can’t get sped up like we did.”
Winona held an early lead for the opening 10-minutes. Austin stayed nearby, finally finding a run of from for an 11-0 run that gave them a 14-point lead. Austin never let the lead back within single digits for the remainder of the night.
Deion Prolo and Aden Pozanc were the lone Winhawk scorers in double digits, as they had 13 and 10 respectively.
The Winhwaks were fresh off their first win of the season, beating Red Wing on Saturday in overtime, 63-61. The hope was some momentum would be in their favor entering the Austin game. You could feel that momentum early, but a familiar result came regardless. Turnovers and inexperience the main culprit. Even so, it’s part of the process, and Martin, in his first realĀ rebuild in his seventh season, is confident in the process.
“We come back. Day after day. Drill after drill. Getting better at our craft. It’s excellent to see a team like that, to know that’s a team that if we want to go anywhere, we have to go through them, It sets the bar for us…Come back tomorrow, get better,” Martin said.
Winona will look to regroup and bounce back come this Thursday when they face Rochester Mayo. Martin tells me that the focus is simple, it’s 0-0. Not to worry about their record, not to worry about their opponent. Just keep getting better.
