Teenager who allegedly killed Lily Peters identified

Jan 10, 2025 | 9:59 AM

The teen charged in the April 2022 murder and sexual assault of 10-year-old Lily Peters in Chippewa Falls is no longer identified by his initials in court documents. He is Carson Peters-Berger. A Chippewa County judge unsealed the complaint against the 16-year-old on Thursday. Investigators say he killed Peters as he was escorting her home after spending a day with her aunt in the spring of 20-22.  Berger, who was 14 at time, told investigators he had been planning the incident and wanted to know what it felt like to take a life. He also admitted to returning to the scene to “hide her body better” after he learned she was reported missing. Judge Steven Gibbs unsealed the complaint against Berger on Thursday, after a nearly 18-month effort by his defense team to move the case to the juvenile system. The 16-year-old has pled not guilty to homicide and child sexual assault charges and will return to court for a hearing in June. No trial dates have been scheduled. Berger faces life in prison if found guilty.

Winona Police have arrested a 17-year-old boy who allegedly shot another teenager in the eye with a BB gun. According to a WPD spokesperson, officers made the arrest Monday afternoon at a residence in the 150 block of East 8th Street. The boy did live there and was possibly hiding out from police. He's charged with second-degree assault and threats of violence. Investigators say last Saturday a group of teenagers was hanging out in the playground area at the old Madison School. A confrontation arose and the boy shot the girl in the eye with the BB gun from "two to three steps away." The spokesperson said the victim does not appear to be seriously injured as she was struck in the eyelid, and the BB did not puncture the eye.
