(KWNO)-Robots will soon be delivering food on the campus of Winona State University and the surrounding area. The Winona City Council at its Monday meeting approved a pilot program with Starship Technologies to operate Personal Delivery Devices (PDDs). The machines will deliver food and beverages from Krysko Commons to campus buildings and certain off-campus residencies within a limited area defined by the city.

The city stipulated the robots must yield right of way to pedestrians, bicyclists and vehicles, be equipped with lights and a reflective flag, not exceed 150 pounds and a height of 72 inches, travel at maximum speed of 5 MPH and operate only during certain hours of the day. The PDDs are also banned from delivering anything that requires age verification such as cigarettes, alcohol or THC products. In addition, a Starship employee must have the ability to take over control of any robot if necessary.

Operation is scheduled to start next week. Starship Technologies paid the city a one-time license fee of $500 and will operate up to seven robots. The company operates PDDs on more than 50 college campuses in the U.S.
