ROCK REWIND: An Iconic Album Release, A Star on the Walk of Fame, and Of Course Controversy

Another MAJOR week in Rock History:

The Beatles released their 29-song double album entitled The Beatles, which later became known as “The White Album” in 1968

In 1970, The Partridge Family’s “I Think I Love You” hit #1

Elton John released “Crocodile Rock” in the US in 1972

KC and the Sunshine Band’s “That’s the Way (I Like It)” hit #1 in 1975, the groups 2nd #1 hit

In 1981, Olivia Newton-John’s “Physical” hit #1, where it would sit for a record tying 10 consecutive weeks

Billy Idol’s live cover of the Tommy James song “Mony Mony” hits #1 in 1987

“Crocodile Rock” becomes Elton John’s first number one hit in 1972

Some major accolades also occurred:

Michael Jackson is awarded a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame directly in front of Mann’s famous Chinese Theatre in 1984.

In 1991, An animated Aerosmith perform “Walk This Way” on the “Flaming Moe’s” episode of The Simpsons. The band is one of the first musical guests on the show.

Nirvana recorded their masterful MTV Unplugged concert in New York in 1993. The show was shot in one take and aired one month later.

Lots of controversy as well:

Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day was arrested for mooning the audience during a show in Milwaukee in 1995. He ended up paying a $141.50 fine for indecent exposure.

In 1997, Gary Glitter would arrested in the United Kingdom on child porn charges. He would flee to Cambodia and Vietnam before being arrested again in 2012.

Michael Jackson appeared outside his Berlin hotel where he briefly held his youngest child, Prince Michael II, over a fourth-floor balcony as dozens of fans watched below in 2002.

In 2003, Michael Jackson was arrested on charges of child molestation

Ozzy Osbourne struggled with a burglar who escaped with $3 million worth of jewelry from his Buckinghamshire mansion in 2004. Osbourne told reporters that he had the masked raider in a headlock as he tried to stop him. The burglar broke free and jumped 30 feet from a window.

We also lost many greats:

Jazz man and bandleader Cab Calloway died of complications from a stroke in 1994

INXS singer Michael Hutchence was found dead in his hotel suite in Sydney in 1997. He hung himself with his own belt.

In 2017, Partridge Family star David Cassidy died of liver and kidney failure.

AC/DC star Malcolm Young died in 2017 from dementia.
