By Jason Melillo Jun 1, 2024 | 6:04 AM

(KWNO)-Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) students at Winona Senior High School are doing their part to mentor younger kids. The AVID 12 class at WSHS designed learning kits for Jefferson Elementary students to combat the knowledge loss that sometimes happens when kids aren’t in school, known as the “summer slide.” AVID students secured funding for the service project, getting donations from Foundation for WAPS and the Earl Graves Memorial Foundation, among others.

A 2020 Brown University study indicated students lose 17-34% of their knowledge from the previous school year during summer break. The learning kits for Jefferson students will give them resources to learn independently at home over the summer months. Students in the AVID 12 class include Brody Ellinghuysen, Ronnie Lemon, Lamel Lillard, Cleo Lohnes, Olivia Poulin, Emily Swartling, Jordyn Werner and Alex Zierfus. The teacher is Maeve Peterson.
