WINONA, Minn. (KWNO)- A fundraising effort is on to add an outdoor skate park and community plaza along west 5th street in Winona.
The proposal includes a stage as part of the plaza to hold live music as well as green space and benches to host other large events. Organizers say the proposed site being next to the Anthem Skate Park and Bob Welch Aquatic Center will create a recreational hub on Winona’s west end.
The Winona Community Foundation has joined on with this project as a fiscal sponsor and will manage all funds raised. To donate, click here.
Fundraising Description: Help Winona build a free skate plaza and multi-use community space!
Your donations will help bring a sense of community and connection to the West End – a space that is free and accessible to all.
This plan consists of a skate plaza located at 800 West 5th Street consisting of a two-level plaza with eight obstacles. Skate plazas are designed to resemble city plazas with features modified to accommodate skateboards, BMX bikes, scooters, and in-line skating.
The plaza will also have a multi-use location. The main feature of the plaza is a stage that will be used for live music and other stage productions. The plaza also contains green spaces and benches that make it suitable for families, audiences, or large gatherings such as a Farmers’ Market.
The proposed plaza is located next to Anthem Skatepark and Boardshop. This location would provide year-round skating at one location. This would also put the indoor skatepark, outdoor skate plaza, the Aquatic Center, and the Aquatic Center park all within a one-block area, creating a recreational complex on the west end of Winona.
The design comes from years of input and planning from local skateboarders. This design will meet the needs of local skateboarders and be unlike the designs of skateparks in neighboring towns.
The plans also include drainage gardens to help manage the additional rainwater created from converting a grassy space to a concrete plaza.
The Winona Community Foundation has joined on with this project as a fiscal sponsor. The Foundation will manage all funds raised.
Please help us spread the word! Our deepest thanks to all who can donate or help in other ways.
