(KWNO)-A Winona man on Saturday night drove his car off the road near Vercotta Landing and thenwandered into the swamp. The Winona County Sheriff’s Office responded around 9:45 p.m. and found the vehicle but the driver, later identified as 33-year-old Joseph Diekmann, was gone. Deputies left the scene but returned when Diekman’s father called to say he could hear his son yelling for help in the area of the crash. A search ensued with Winona County Dive and Rescue, the Minnesota DNR and Minnesota State Patrol all on the scene. DNR airboats eventually found Diekmann around 2:30 a.m. on Sunday. He was not hurt and as of this report is not charged with crime. A Winona County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson said Diekmann was intoxicated.
