(KWNO)-A man allegedly tried to swallow fentanyl pills after being stopped by law enforcement. According to a Winona County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson, William Chapman Junior of Minnesota City was walking on Highway 14 near the Winona Arches on Tuesday morning. When a Minnesota State Patrol officer made contact with Champman Jr. he ran away and attempted to swallow an unknown number of pills. The pills were in a baggy and were believed to be fentanyl. Champman Jr. was transported to Winona Health and as of Wednesday morning was not under arrest.
In what is believed to be a related incident, Winona County Sheriff’s Office deputies were called to a residence on County Road 120 on Tuesday night. The caller said a man who appeared to be intoxicated knocked on the door saying he was robbed. Deputies responded and identified the person as Mason Maloney of Kellogg. According to the spokesperson Maloney was “delusional” and said he was “chasing people and people were chasing him.” Maloney had 25 pills on him that field tested positive as fentanyl and what the spokesperson called a “large amount of cash.” Maloney was arrested. Law enforcement believes Champman Jr. and Maloney were likely at the same location near the Arches but are not sure exactly where they were coming from.
