City Council Approves Fundraising Campaign for Trees

WINONA, Minn. (KWNO)- The Winona City Council approved a fundraising initiative to preserve Winona’s ash trees and to diversify the city’s tree species.  

Friends of Winona Parks will work with the city forester to remove ash trees that are not in ideal locations or are falling victim to the Emerald Ash Borer. Those trees would be replaced by a different species of tree that is at least 3-5 inches in diameter.  

Howard Kruger is one of the citizens leading the effort. He told the council he has close to $10,000 in funding commitments and several people have expressed interest in planting trees.  

The parks group placed green ribbons on ash trees along Huff St. and in Sinclair Park to give citizens an idea of what some of the city parks would look like without those trees.  

The group will raise the funds via the Winona Community Foundation.
