Winona Police: Drivers must stop when school bus is flashing red lights

By Jason Melillo Sep 1, 2023 | 9:56 AM

(KWNO)-Some schools are back in session already and most districts will start next week. That means we’ll see school buses back on the road. The Winona Police Department is urging drivers to be patient when encountering school buses. If you see a bus’s yellow lights flashing it means children are present and might be starting to walk into the roadway so slow down.

The Winona Police Facebook page says when a bus’s lights are flashing red and the stop arm is extended state law requires drivers to stop at least 20 feet away from a school bus. It is a gross misdemeanor to run the stop arm if there are children getting on or off the bus or to pass on the right side of the bus. Children have to be completely out of the roadway before a driver can start to move again.
