MnDOT: Extreme heat can buckle roads

By Jason Melillo Jul 27, 2023 | 9:54 AM

(KWNO)-Thursday will be the warmest day of the month in the southern half of Minnesota, according to forecasters. The National Weather Service is predicting a high temperature of 94 degrees with heat index (temperature and relative humidity) values as high as 100 degrees. Extreme heat like that can affect travel by causing roads to buckle.

“If drivers do see them, we want you to call 911. It is an emergency, that gets our crews alerted as quickly as possible so then we can get out there and block traffic from that area and get it fixed,” says MnDOT spokesperson Anne Meyer.

Meyer says when called in immediately, MnDOT can typically fix the area within a day or two’s time.

Cities and town in southwest Minnesota reached 100 degrees on Wednesday and as far north as the Canadian border temps will still be in the 90s on Thursday. Temperatures and dew points will drop Friday giving way to more comfortable weather this weekend in the Winona area.
