SMU baseball, softball fields getting artificial turf

By Jason Melillo Jun 9, 2023 | 9:09 AM

(KWNO)-Saint Mary’s University will replace the dirt infields on its baseball and softball fields with artificial turf. Two former SMU baseball players led the effort to raise more than $800, 000 to pay for the project. The aim is to minimize the number of games cancelled or postponed, especially early in the spring.

“The dirt field takes a long time to be game-ready due to frost, rain, and fluctuating temperatures. We couldn’t play many games this past year because of poor infield conditions. This is going to alleviate a lot of that,” said SMU baseball coach Nick Winecke.

Construction on the fields will start in July and is expected to be done by the start of 2023-24 academic year.
