(KWNO)-There were audible cries when Winona Police Chief Tom Williams announced the body found on Wednesday in Fillmore County is Madeline Kingsbury.
“This (Thursday) morning the Southern Minnesota Regional Medical Examiner’s Office performed an autopsy. Law enforcement has confirmed the remains are those of Madeline Kingsbury,” Williams said at a standing-room only news conference at Winona City Hall.
Digital evidence collected by investigators led to a wooded area near a gravel road off Highway 43 north of Mabel. A Fillmore County deputy found Kingsbury’s body around 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Williams said the area had been previously searched but Kingsbury’s body “was covered and concealed in such a manner that she was not visible.”
Kingsbury’s ex-boyfriend Adam Fravel was arrested without incident on Wednesday afternoon at a residence in Mabel. He is charged with second-degree murder and is being held in the Winona County Jail. The land where Kingsbury’s body was found is not owned by Fravel or any of his relatives. But Fillmore County Sheriff John DeGeorge did confirm land owned by Fravel’s relatives is “within several minutes” of where the body was found.
Law enforcement would not comment on any charging decisions or on any statements made by Adam Fravel following his arrest. Chief Williams said law enforcement will remain “steadfast” in holding anyone involved in Kingsbury’s death accountable.
