(KWNO)- Winona Area Public Schools announced that they are now accepting applications for the Rios Spanish Immersion Program for the 2023-24 kindergarten class.
The Rios Spanish Immersion Program is Winona County’s only language immersion program and it is free and open to all students in Winona Area Public Schools.
WAPS will hold two informational sessions in the month of February that will include classroom visits and a Q and A session.
Those sessions are scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 10:00 a.m. and Thursday, Feb. 16 at 1:00 p.m.
The application window for the Immersion Program will close on Friday, Feb. 24. WAPS says that if there are more applicants that spots available, a lotter will be held to determine the class. They add that those not chosen will be placed on a waitlist and if spots are available after Feb. 24, they will be filled on a first come, first-serve basis.
The goal of the Rios Spanish Immersion Program is to provide educational experiences, beginning in kindergarten, that support academic and linguistic development in two languages-Spanish and English. The curriculum remains the same as a non-immersion program within WAPS, with the added curriculum being learning Spanish from an early age.
