(KWNO)- The Minnesota Department of Health today reported a presumptive case of monkeypox virus infection in an adult in the Twin Cities area, the first such case in the state.
Initial testing was done on Saturday by the MDH and confirmatory testing is being done at the U.S. Center for Disease Control in Atlanta.
The MDH says the patient was likely exposed while traveling abroad.
The virus does not easily spread among people with casual contact but transmission can occur through contact with infectious sores and bodily fluids.
Minnesota Health Commissioner, Jan Malcolm says,
“While the threat of monkeypox generally remains low, it’s important that everyone be aware of this disease so that those at risk can seek medical care and get tested promptly if they believe they have symptoms.”
As of June 24th, the CDC reports 201 total cases of monkeypox in 26 other U.S. States and 4,100 total cases in 47 countries where the disease is not typically reported.
