(KWNO)- A bill authored by Sen. Jeremy Miller R-Winona that would keep Minnesota’s historical tax credit in place is getting supports from Republicans, Democrats, and Independents in St. Paul.
“It promotes economic development, it encourages public-private partnerships and it’s led to a number of jobs across the state of Minnesota,” Said Miller during an interview on KWNO’s In the Know Thursday.
The tax credit, enacted in 2010 is scheduled to sunset in June. Miller said it’s given Winona an economic boost. “In Winona recently there’s been I believe about four buildings in the downtown area that’s generated about $2 million in investment.”
Supporters of the tax credit say it has generated $3.5 billion of economic activity in the private sector and created over 18,650 jobs and has impacted 97% of Minnesota industries.
A companion bill in the House also has bipartisan support. Miller is confident lawmakers will get the legislation across the finish line as part of a larger tax bill by the end of the session.
