(KWMN)- It was nothing short of a dominant performance yesterday from Winhawk softball as they walked through the first two rounds of state, shutting out their opponent in both games.
In round one, the Winhawks slaughtered Rocori High, 9-0, behind a stellar performance in the center circle from Junior Makayla Steffes. Steffes pitched seven shutout innings, adding 11 K’s in the process. The Offense was powered by Senior Grace Fricke, who nailed two dingers and tacked on four total RBI’s.
In round two, it was the Ava Hamsund show in which the Junior drove in two runs on two doubles, while pitching seven shutout innings and as a nice side-dish, had five K’s.
The two wins earn Winhawk softball yet another trip to the state title game. Now, they’re second straight year in the state title game, they’ll face familiar foe Mankato West. Not only did the Winhawks already beat West once this year (7-5, back on May, 17th), but this is also a rematch of last years state semi-final matchup. Winhawks won that semi-final in extra innings.
On one side you have a Mankato team itching for revenge but on the other, the Winhawks are starving to make up for the championship loss last year and earn their place in Minnesota sports history. Two rivals, two teams with revenge on their minds, only one can win the state championship.
Winhawks vs Mankato West is Today, June 10th at 1:30 p.m. from Caswell Park in Mankato, Minn.
