(KWNO)-Minnesota House is on pace to set a record for the most bills introduced during a legislative session.
“When we return we’re going to break a record for the historic number of bills introduced in the Minnesota House. 5,000 bills will be the number we hit at some point,” Winona DFL Rep. Gene Pelowski said during an interview on KWNO’s In the Know Thursday.
The state legislature is on its Easter/Passover break and resumes the session on Tuesday.
Pelowski says the sheer number of proposals has overwhelmed the state’s system that produces drafts and copies of introduced legislation.
“We’ve actually broken the revisor’s system that produces bills,” Pelowski said. “We have to have a new system put in both hardware and software because of the number of bills and size of bills.”
Pelowski said he’s been pushing to reform the legislative process since 2007. Two possible solutions he said are limiting the number of bills a lawmaker can introduce and set a cut-off date to introduce bills.
