WASHINGTON D.C.(KWNO)-The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee held confirmation hearings this week for Supreme Court Nominee Ketanji-Brown Jackson.

A floor vote to confirm Jackson to the high court is expected to come up later in the Senate. Minnesota Democrat Sen. Tina Smith tells KWNO she plans to vote to confirm Jackson.

“I’ll be very proud to support her nomination. She is imminently qualified. She handled herself so well in the hearings,” Smith said. “She I think believes strongly in the rule of law and the constitution.”

Republicans during the hearings raised concerns about Jackson’s sentencing history as an appellate court judge, particularly in cases involving child pornography convictions. Smith said that criticism has been refuted by fact-checkers.

“Some of my Republican colleagues were attacking her for a record that was virtually or exactly the same as records of judges they themselves supported when they were nominated by President Trump,” said Smith.

GOP Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnel has said he will vote against confirming Jackson, criticizing her for not taking a position on the size of the high court. Jackson needs at least 51 votes to become the nation’s first Black woman to sit on the Supreme Court.
