Engage Winona Executive Director Marcia Ratliff speaks in front of city council members during a meeting held on Sept. 20.

WINONA, Minn. (KWNO)- Over 2,000 Winonans shared their thoughts on the future of the community.

Engage Winona, tabbed by the city to gather public input as part of the process to form the next comprehensive plan, reported over 5,700 comments were submitted between October of 2021 and January of 2022. Executive Director Marcia Ratliff told KWNO said a lot of respondents valued the city’s sense of community, recreation, arts, and culture.

Ratliff also said there was support for continuing efforts aimed at helping the downtown to thrive. Winona Planner Carlos Espinosa called the input “incredibly valuable.”

“It will inform the rest of the work on the comprehensive plan moving forward throughout the rest of the year and at the beginning of 2023,” Espinosa said during an interview on KWNO’s In the Know.

Espinosa said the input will provide a draft of values to guide the formation of the comprehensive plan. Ratliff said the values draft will then go back to the community for feedback.

“We’ll be continuing those conversations and broadening them throughout the summer to bring each specific comprehensive plan topic to the community and ask for ideas and input,” Ratliff said.
