WINONA, Minn. (KWNO)-The Winona City council has taken a step towards filling the open city manager position.
The council voted 6-1 to enter a process where members will decide whether or not to offer the position to Acting City Manager Chad Ubl. If the council approves of the process’s results, then Ubl will be the new city manager, if not the post will be open to other candidates.
Ubl took over the role of city manager after the city announced Steve Sarvi was no longer with the city in October of last year.
Councilwoman Eileen Moeller was the lone no vote. She praised Ubl’s work as acting city manager and said he would be a top candidate for the post.
“I have said this since we started through this process that I think the most democratic and reasonable thing is to open the job up officially for other people to potentially apply,” Moeller said.
Councilman Steve Young said he’s comfortable with the plan.
“We’re allowing ourselves to have options and we’ve got a process that we’re going to adopt,” Young said. “If things work out, we know where we’ll land and if they don’t, we can widen the search.”
If the council were to not go with Ubl, they would bring in a third-party consultant to fill the role. The council is expected to work through the process for the next several weeks.
