Miller Mentoring Program Seeking More Mentors

WINONA, Minn. (KWNO)-January is National Mentoring Month.

For the Miller Mentoring program, the month offers a chance to highlight its impact that spans over 20 years and to recruit more mentors. Drew Althoff, Director of Miller Mentoring, described the program during an interview on KWNO this week.

“We are an after-school mentoring program with Winona Area Public Schools,” Althoff said. “We serve grades 5-12 so we have a wide range of students that we work with and our mentors are the lifeblood of the work that we do.”

Althoff, who was a mentor before becoming the program’s director, says mentors come from all sectors of the community. He says the program is looking for more people to sign on as mentors.

Althoff says the program’s student referral list has grown throughout the school year.

“We lost a lot of time out there with that face-to-face interaction,” said Althoff. “We were forced to go to virtual mentoring setup for the last school year and when we came back we realized we missed out 18 months with these students face-to-face.”

Althoff said the program is seeking community members to volunteer as mentors.
