WINONA, Minn. (KWNO)-Winona Health has started to administer COVID-19 vaccines for children between the ages of five and 11.

The CDC authorized a reduced version of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for children earlier this week. Winona Health President/CEO Rachelle Schultz told KWNO that families were asking about getting their kids a shot on Wednesday.

“It’s here so people can bring their kids in and we’re happy to give it,” Schultz said.

Schultz said Winona Health was able to order the Pfizer vaccine for five to 11-year-olds before they were authorized. She says that allowed Winona Health to give the shots out shortly after the CDC signed off on their use.

The COVID-19 vaccines are offered during walk-in clinics on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Winona Health’s Parkview Office Building. Schultz says the vaccine is safe for kids.

“There’s a lot of data on this now there’s studies on this looking at any type of side effects, any type of other occurrences. It’s shown to be very safe for all populations at this point,” Schultz said.
