WABASHA, Minn. (KWNO)-The National Eagle Center in Wabasha will close until the Spring of 2022 on Monday as crews begin a $27 million expansion project.
“What we’re closing down for right now is just phase one,” Marketing Manager Ed Haun told KWNO. “This part of it will really focus on the existing National Eagle Center building.”
Haun says the majority of the work is focused on the second floor of the building where crews will add exhibit space. There are also plans to repurpose the classroom area on the first floor, which Haun says will create space for more eagle ambassadors and allow the center to have all eagle care, housing and display under the same roof.
Haun says work on Phase 2 of the renovation could begin as early as 2023. Haun says people come from all over the country and world to visit the eagle center.
“Just being able to expand the offering we have as far as the type of exhibits that we are hosting, that will bring more people and that will bring more interest, more tourism dollars to Wabasha and the region,” Haun said.
Haun says phase two will focus on the areas surrounding the eagle center, which will include a docking area for Mississippi River tour boats. The center’s hours this weekend are Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
