WINONA, Minn. (KWNO)-Rail Safety Week is underway in Winona.

Local leaders were out at railroad crossings around Winona on Wednesday to stencil signs on sidewalks that advise pedestrians to cautiously cross the tracks. The Week is put on by Operation Life Saver Minnesota.

“Our mission is to provide education and to raise awareness to the public so they can make safer decisions around tracks and trains,” said Project Lifesaver Minnesota Executive Director Sheryl Cummings. “About every three hours in this country a person or a vehicle is hit by a train.”

Each day of the week has themes. Rail Safety Week runs until Sept. 26.
