Winhawks Stumble in Stewartville

The Winona Winhawks (2-2) lost 43-13 at #2 Stewartville (4-0) Friday night.

Both teams traded punts early and the defenses held strong for the score to be knotted at 0-0 when the first quarter ended. Then, Tigers Quarterback Pete Tschetter found Isaac Speer on a 16-yard throw to move Stewartville ahead 7-0 early in the 2^nd. The Winhawks responded instantly as sophomore, Marty Coker returned the ensuing kickoff 92 yards to the house to tie the game at 7.

Stewartville responded with a six-play drive that ended with Peyton English running it in from three yards out. After pulling ahead 14-7, the host Tigers scored twice more in the quarter with Speer adding one more touchdown grab and Brett Miller catching one for a score. A fake extra-point on one of the touchdowns made their lead 29-7 at the break.

To open the second half Stewartville made it 36-7 after Tschetter threw another touchdown to Miller. The Winhawks were kept off the board in the 3^rd and the Tigers added one more score early in the 4^th with Tschetter throwing his fifth touchdown of the game. The Winhawks produced a late touchdown run from senior, running back Xavier Vargas. The final score from Schafer Field was Stewartville 43, Winona 13.

The Winhawks travel to play at Byron next Friday night at 7 PM.
