Sep 22, 2026 | 11:54 AM

David James Knight was born October 15, 1948 in Saint Paul, Minnesota, to Jim and Mary Knight. He died on September 17, 2026, in Winona, Minnesota.

David grew up in Newport, Minnesota, graduating from Park High School in 1966, and went on to attend Winona State University in Winona, Minnesota. He served his country in the United States Army National Guard for 6 years. David continued his dedication to public service through his career with the City of Winona Police Department for 16 years, Winona County Human Services for 12 years, and 3 years with Marion County in Florida working in the Department for Children and Families and the Child Advocacy Center.

In 1995, David and Cheryl were married, blending their families and creating a home filled with love and support. Over the years, they took immense pride in watching their children—and now their grandchildren and great-grandchildren—grow up and accomplish their dreams.

David, often referred to as “Papa Dave” or “Daddy Dave” by many friends and family, took that father-figure role seriously. Family was everything to him. David was incredibly proud of the accomplishments and milestones for his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He celebrated all the wins of his family no matter how big or small, and was always their biggest supporter. Not only was David always standing behind his family, but he also walked alongside them offering advice and guidance. He welcomed all into his house and family with open arms, an open heart, and unwavering support.

David lived his life following his passions, and he had many of them. On nice days, you could often find him playing a round (or two) of golf, particularly enjoying games at Westfield in Minnesota or Summerglen in Florida. He loved watching sports of all kinds, especially Minnesota teams like the Vikings, Wild, and Twins, as well as the Florida Gators and NASCAR racing. David also rode motorcycles and was a former member of the Blue Knights Motorcycle Club. His love for family and friends didn’t stop with people; David had a particular soft spot for four-legged family members, including his little buddy Otis, and Zena girl, both of whom were treated like royalty with treats, toys, and comfort every day.

While he had many hobbies, David’s favorite pastime was simply the time spent with family. He cherished holidays and large family gatherings but enjoyed the unplanned visits and phone calls from family and friends just as much.

Through every season of life, David’s love for his family remained steady and strong. Whether offering quiet encouragement, a helping hand, or a constant word of support, his devotion to those he cherished was the true heart of his life.

David is survived by his wife Cheryl Knight; sister Deb Knight; brother-in-law Michael Nelson; daughters Kristi Knight and Kat Thoeny; and son Chris (Ali) Mayer. He is also survived by his grandchildren Justin (Jess) Nachtweih and Ally (Trevor) Haedtke; his great-grandchildren Sophia, Allison, Tucker, Mila, and Olivia; along with many other family members and friends who will dearly miss him.

In addition to his parents, Jim and Mary Knight, he was preceded in death by his sister, Kathleen (Kathy) Nelson; his police partner and longtime friend, Carl Bambenek; and his four-legged little buddy, Otis.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be sent to organizations close to David’s heart:
