(KWNO)-A fire engulfed the Whitewater Valley Motel in St. Charles on Wednesday night. St. Charles Fire and Rescue and the St. Charles Police Department responded to the scene around 8:00 p.m. after being alerted by a motel guest who saw smoke coming from the roof of the building. First responders evacuated the motel.

Firefighters from St. Charles, assisted by the Lewiston and Altura Fire Departments, battled the blaze for several hours, eventually bringing it under control around 11:00 p.m. The cause of the fire is believed to be “an electrical malfunction inside one of the walls of the motel,” according to a post on the St. Charles Fire and Rescue Facebook page. Approximately 70% of the motel was destroyed by the fire.
