Feb 24, 2026 | 10:15 AM

Kathleen Rae (Merdink) Ulbrich, age 78, passed away peacefully on February 6, surrounded by her loving family.

Born on October 15, 1947, in Crookston, Minnesota, Kathleen was welcomed into the world by her devoted parents, Bert and Helen (Klopp) Merdink. She spent her early childhood in Minneapolis before moving to Hastings in the 5th grade—a move that led to lifelong friendships she treasured for more than 65 years.

Kathleen attended school in Hastings and was especially proud of her time as a majorette, remembered for marching at football games with grace and spirit. During these years, she met her love, Kenneth “Kenny” Ulbrich. They were married on August 24, 1968.

After graduating from Hastings High School, Kathleen attended Concordia University and later the University of Minnesota, ultimately earning her nursing degree—a calling that perfectly reflected her compassionate heart.

Throughout their marriage, Kathleen and Ken lived in Mankato, Bad Kreuznach (Germany), Minneapolis, and Alton, Illinois, before settling in Winona in 1984. There, they raised their two children, Annissa and Stephen.

Kathleen devoted her life to caring for others. She worked in various hospital and home-care settings, including Watkins Home, Winona Health, and Winona Health Hospice. Nursing was more than a job for her—it was an extension of her kindness, patience, and unwavering empathy. She cared deeply for her patients and felt honored to be part of their lives.

Outside of nursing, Kathleen’s passions were many. She loved traveling, especially to Montana and Wyoming to visit her parents, siblings, nephews, niece, and close friends. She found joy in being “captain of her own ship,” exploring the open road and the places she loved most. She also enjoyed collecting antique dolls, hosting tea parties, and spending cherished time with her family and lifelong friends.

Kathleen is survived by her daughter, Annissa Ulbrich (Gary Manhart); her son, Stephen (Lisa) Ulbrich; and her beloved grandchildren Kylie, Kelsey, Samuel, and Lacey. She is also survived by her brother, Johnny (Diana) Merdink, along with many cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nephews, and a great-niece.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Bert and Helen; her sister, Janice; her brother, David; and several beloved aunts and uncles.

The Ulbrich family extends heartfelt gratitude to all who have offered love, prayers, and kindness during this time. Kathleen wanted to ensure her dear friends—from grade school, high school, college, nursing, and her neighborhoods—are recognized for their enduring friendship. She truly cherished each of you.

A service honoring Kathleen’s life will be held at Fawcett Junker Funeral Home in Winona on Friday, February 27, 2026, at 11 a.m. with visitation starting at 10 a.m. A luncheon will follow. She will be laid to rest beside her husband at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Preston, Minnesota.
