Josephine Marion (Sobotta) Miemietz passed away on February 21, 2026, at the Trempealeau County Health Care Center.
Josie was born on July 13, 1929, on a farm in North Creek to Lewis “Lewy” and Mary (Sheperd) Sobotta. Josie attended the One-Room North Creek School. She married Edward Miemietz at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Independence on October 17, 1949. Eddie preceded Josie in death on September 14, 2001. Together, Eddie and Josie had two children: Patricia (Ron) Grulkowski and Mary (Bill) Flury. Eddie and Josie farmed in Wickham Valley for 47 years, milking cows and picking eggs which they sold to make a living. Josie was well known in the area for her baked goods, especially homemade bread and coffee cakes.
Josie was a member of the Rosary Society, Women’s Organization, Red Hats and the Funeral Luncheon Group at S.S. Peter and Paul Church. After moving to Independence, she worked at Caroline’s Coffee shop for years and as a cook at the Franciscan Skemp (Mayo) Hospital in Arcadia for 16 and a half years until her retirement. Eddie and Josie celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1999.
Josie was preceded in death by her parents: Lewis and Mary Sobotta; husband, Eddie; sister: Angeline (Albert) Giemza; six brothers: Raymond, Wilfred “Jim”, Octavious “Pete”, Benjamin “Shorty”, Richard “Dude”, and Everest “John”; in-laws: Ernest (Adiline) Miemietz, John (Lucielle) Miemietz, and Loretta (George) Kamrowski.
She is survived by her daughters: Pat (Ron) and Mary (Bill); grandchildren: Jeff (Jessy) Grulkowski, Shelly (Brian) Boldon, Shawna (Tyler) Pientok, Sara (Jeremy) Amundson, Niki (Trent) Kube; six great-grandchildren: Teagan, Kellan, and Kendall Pientok, Tristan and Jordan Amundson and Brooks Kube; sister-in-law: Celene Sobotta; and several nieces, nephews and friends.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, February 26, 2026, at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church with Father George officiating. Family and friends are welcome for visitation beginning at 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass at Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
