ROCK REWIND: Achievements, Tragedy and Scandal!

Another big week in Rock History!

Let’s look at some major releases and accolades:

Love Me Do from The Beatles hit #1 in 1964, their debut single in the U.S.

In 1965, Help Me, Rhonda by The Beach Boys hit #1, their second of four chart toppers

Percy Sledge’s When A Man Loves A Woman hit #1 in 1966

In 1967, The Beatles released their landmark album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band

The Rolling Stones single Jumpin’ Jack Flash was released in 1968

The Beatles started recording their White Album in 1968

In 1969, Get Back by the Beatles hit #1, their ONLY single with credits to another artist, Billy Preston

Brown Sugar by The Rolling Stones hit #1 in 1971

In 1977, KISS provide Marvel Comics with a vial of their blood to be mixed with the red ink used to print their upcoming comic book

Lipps Inc’s Funkytown hit #1 in 1980

In 1983, Flashdance…What a Feeling from Irene Cara, hits #1

Everything She Wants by Wham hit #1 in 1985

The noise level from U2’s 1987 concert in Rome sets off earthquake alarms

In 1994, After a 14-year hiatus, the Eagles reunite for a show in Burbank, California, closing the show with Desperado

Eminem’s second major-label album, The Marshall Mathers LP, becomes the fastest-selling rap album ever when it sells 1.76 million copies in its debut week in 2000

In 2008, Paul McCartney is given an honorary Doctorate of Music at Yale University

Hootie & the Blowfish debut album, Cracked Rear View became the #1 in 1995

A few marriages occurred:

Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler married his second wife, clothing designer Teresa Barrick in 1988

In 1992, Paul Simon married Edie Brickell

Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley got married in the Dominican Republic in 1994

A couple of “lasts” happened:

Jimi Hendrix played the Berkeley Community Theatre in 1970. It was one of his last live performances before his death

In 1983, KISS play their last concert in their famous makeup; at least until 1996 when they re-form with all original members and painted faces once again

One scare for an artist:

In 1996, Firemen arrive at the burning home of Eric Clapton to find the guitarist running in and out of the home to save his guitar collection. The house is gutted

And of course there was tragedy:

Gregg Allman died from liver cancer in 2017

in 2017, Chris Cornell is laid to rest at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles next to Johnny Ramone. Mourners at the funeral service include Dave Navarro, Tom Morello, Lars Ulrich, James Hetfield, Courtney Love and his Soundgarden bandmates Matt Cameron and Kim Thayil

Tina Turner died in 2023 due to kidney failure
