(MNN)-While men have historically always consumed more alcohol than women, that gap has been slowly closing for decades. Now, for the first time, women between the ages of 18 and 25 are drinking more than men.
“Even though we may want to label it with four or five drinks typically over two hours, we look at somebody drinking like that as a drinking for effect rather than somebody who is drinking on occasion or somebody who is drinking casually or having some wine with dinner,” says Dr. Alta DeRoo is Chief Medical Officer at Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation.
Binge drinking is defined as a man having five or more alcoholic drinks or a woman having four or more alcoholic drinks in one sitting, or within two to three hours. Alcoholism is the number one substance abuse disorder.
