(KWMN)- Section tournaments started for the Cotter and Rushford-Peterson girls last night as they both find wins to advance to their respective quarterfinals.
The #4 seeded Cotter Ramblers took down #13 Randolph with ease, 75-34. Rushford-Peterson, also a #4 seed, toppled Lyle-Pacelli in a similar fashion, 73-34. The opening round games typically looks like this when double-digit seeds go up against a top five seed. For Cotter and RP, though, they know it’s all about the next game.
Cotter advances to the section 1AA quarterfinal where they’ll face #5 Triton from the Rochester Civic Center. It will be a rematch from last year’s section quarters when Cotter dominated Triton, 68-53. We’ll have the coverage of this one on Monday night on the Winona Sports Network.
Rushford-Peterson advances to the section 1A quarters, where they matchup with #5 Southland. They’ll tip off from the Civic Center around the same time as Cotter, just across the hall.
The reality of the situation for both of these teams is that they can expect to face the #1 seed in their brackets if they were to win this game. It’s imperative not to look ahead, of course, but it’s daunting. Rushford will have to go through Goodhue, Cotter through Caledonia–both of which have dominated their section opponents throughout the season. Even so, with a win on Monday, these two teams will be just two more wins away from the state tournament.
