(KWMN)- A scorching hot start from Rochester Mayo was plenty to get the job done as Mayo toppled the Winona Boys 79-58 in Winona last night.
Rochester opened the game as good as they possibly could. The first 1o possessions netted points, as they shot out to 20 points in the first six minutes of action. Winona couldn’t extinguish the fire for the majority of the first half, as Mayo’s surge continued throughout the first 18 minutes, leading to a 54-23 halftime lead.
Head Coach for the Winhawk Boys, Kyle Martin, said after the game that it was something he’s never seen before, the start from Mayo, and at the same time, he didn’t think they did much to allow it, Mayo just couldn’t miss.
“Honestly, I thought we started off okay,” he said. “It was one of our better starts of the season…I switched defenses three or four times, and they shot the heck out of the ball. Some nights–not often, you run into a collectivity of guys that can’t miss.”
Going into the half after being bull rushed like that is a tough conversation to have. There isn’t much you can say to a group of defeated players. Martin said that he emphasized the fact that there won’t be many more times they get to do this together. There’s no reason to give up now.
The message resonated with the squad, as Winona was able to fight back–a little bit–and at least win the second half. They still lost by 21 points, but it was the effort that Martin applauded afterwards,
“I thought it was a good character assessment out of halftime. A lot of teams could fold, go down 50 or 60. Won the second half, hopefully take a little momentum.”
They’ll hope that momentum shows itself in the game come Friday night, as the 2-20 Winhawks will face the 7-14 Mankato West Scarlets.
