(KWMN)- The Winona Winhawk girls managed to keep the matchup with Rochester John Marshall close for the first ten minutes of the game, but an eight-minute scoring drought allowed Rochester to pull away to close out the opening half in route to a 55-32 win.
Adriana Brenegen and Brittany Lee led the way for the Winona offense that spent most of the night struggling to find the bottom of the bucket. Brenegen finished with 11 points, Lee with nine.
“We’ll build on some things, I thought defensively, foundational, the effort was good…We can build on that.” Head Coach Tim Gleason said after the loss, “That’s all we can do right now.”
Winona drops to 0-11 on the season, and 0-8 in the Big Nine conference as they continue to feel the effects of losing their entire starting five from last season.
Although the struggles, Gleason thinks the attitude in the team is still moving in the right direction,
“We’re going to build on some of these things, continue working on taking care of the basketball,” Gleason says of his message to the team after the loss. “You got to be gentle to yourself. Be wary of how you talk to yourself at this point in the season. And come back every day like it’s a new day.”
There is improvement amongst the team, it hasn’t showed up in the win column, but a very inexperienced team to start the season is slowing becoming experienced. Gleason said that he can see signs of that improvement. It’s just a matter of time until they break through.
Winona will be back in action on Saturday taking on Red Wing.
