The new year is here, and you know what that means—new year, new you, right? Or maybe it’s more like new year, same you, but with a Pinterest board full of ambitious goals. If you’re anything like me, by the time February rolls around, your resolutions are about as good as forgotten. But not this year! This year, we’re going to conquer those goals. Here’s how:
1. Set Achievable Goals
We’ve all been guilty of setting wild, borderline-impossible resolutions. “I’ll work out every day!” or “I’ll save $10,000 by spring!” But if your goals feel overwhelming from the get-go, you’re setting yourself up for failure.
Instead, set SMART goals:
- Specific: What exactly are you trying to achieve?
- Measurable: How will you know you’ve succeeded?
- Achievable: Is this actually doable?
- Relevant: Does this goal align with what you care about?
- Time-bound: Set a deadline.
Example: Instead of “get fit,” try “go for a 30-minute walk three times a week until March.” Boom. Clear, realistic, and totally doable.
Don’t forget you can also make goals to let go of things instead of taking more and more on your plate. Learn all about making “Un-Resolutions” on Unveiled Local!
2. Baby Steps, Baby!
Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither is your new-and-improved self. Break your resolutions into smaller, bite-sized tasks. If your goal is to declutter your house, don’t aim to tackle it all in one weekend. Start with one drawer or one closet. Celebrate small wins because progress is progress!
3. Track Your Progress
Nothing feels better than checking something off a list. Keep a journal, use a habit-tracking app, or even just slap some gold stars on a calendar. Seeing your progress is motivating and gives you something tangible to celebrate. Plus, who doesn’t love an excuse to buy stationery?
4. Tell People… But Choose Wisely
Accountability is key, but so is knowing who to share your goals with. Your overly competitive friend might turn your “run a 5K” goal into a race to qualify for the Boston Marathon. Instead, share with someone supportive who will encourage you (and remind you) without judgment.
5. Treat Yourself… But Not Too Much
Rewards can keep you motivated, but make sure they don’t sabotage your goal. If you’ve been crushing your resolution to eat healthier, don’t reward yourself with a week’s worth of fast food. Instead, treat yourself to a fancy coffee or a new gadget that aligns with your goals. (A smoothie blender, anyone?)
6. Be Kind to Yourself
Here’s the thing: You’re human, not a robot. Life happens. If you mess up, skip a day, or lose steam, don’t throw in the towel. Instead, take a deep breath, reassess, and get back on track. Progress isn’t linear, and one misstep doesn’t erase all your hard work.
7. Find Your “Why”
When the going gets tough, remember why you set your resolution in the first place. Write it down and keep it somewhere you’ll see it often. Whether it’s to feel healthier, be more organized, or finally start that side hustle, reconnecting with your purpose can reignite your motivation.
8. Embrace the Power of a Fresh Start
Who says resolutions are only for January 1st? Every day, week, or month is a chance to start fresh. Fell off the wagon in March? Hop back on in April. A resolution reboot is better than no resolution at all.
9. Remember: You’ve Got This
You’re amazing just for trying to better yourself. Resolutions aren’t about perfection; they’re about progress. Whether you stick to every single goal or just a few, you’re making strides toward becoming an even better version of yourself. And that’s worth celebrating.
